Historic victory for Mali as Super Eagles stumble in Marrakech

The Super Eagles of Nigeria stumbled against the Eagles of Mali to end a 49-year record in the friendly held in Marrakech, Morocco.

Mali thumped Finidi George’s men 2-0, to spoil the manager’s good start as Nigeria’s interim coach, after beating Ghana 2-1 last Friday.

The last time Mali defeated the Super Eagles was in a friendly encounter on September 5th, 1975, with a scoreline of 4-1.

Prior to this encounter, Nigeria had maintained an unbeaten record against Mali, registering five wins and three draws in their previous eight meetings.

Despite Nigeria’s early dominance, it was Mali who capitalized on a defensive error to take the lead in the 14th minute, with El Bilal Toure finding the back of the net.

Although the Super Eagles showed glimpses of a comeback, Mali’s defense remained unmoved, frustrating any attempts to level the score.

Nigeria’s hopes were further dashed when Moses Simon was forced off due to injury in the first half, making way for Cyriel Dessers.

Despite some promising opportunities, including a chance for Dessers and a low shot from Iheanacho, Nigeria failed to find the breakthrough.

In the dying minutes, Mali sealed their win with Kamory Doumbia finding the back of the net.
